Casey Selected In WPS Draft - January 15th 2010
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former University of Maryland women's soccer player Mary Casey became the first-ever Terrapin to be selected in the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) Draft when the Los Angeles Sol picked her Friday afternoon.
"Our coaching staff has said it all along - Mary just needs an opportunity," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "That's all she had here, and she did pretty well for herself. And we are confident that she will do the same at the next level. Congrats to her - she deserves this!"
Casey, who was selected in the fourth round with the 36th overall pick, closed out her stellar career as a Terp by helping lead Maryland to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament and a 14-6-2 overall record. As a senior in 2009, Casey anchored a Terrapin defense that posted nine shutouts and held opponents to less than one goal per game. A 2008 first team All-ACC selection, Casey finished her career with a school-record 1.03 career goals against average. She also ranks fourth all-time with 13 career shutouts and is seventh on the school's all-time list with 136 saves.
The Sol won the inaugural WPS regular season championship, but lost to Sky Blue FC in the 2009 WPS Championship game.
Terps Ranked 11th, Spencer & Baker Honored By NSCAA - Dec 8th 2009
Maryland earns No. 11 ranking in final poll; pair of sophomores earn All-Region honors
The University of Maryland women's soccer team finished 11th in the final NSCAA poll of the year and sophomores Jasmyne Spencer and Mallory Baker earned All-Southeast Region honors.
The Terps finished the 2009 season with a 14-6-2 record and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament before losing to eventual national champion North Carolina by a 1-0 margin.
"This is a terrific team honor, and recognition of what was an outstanding season," said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. "From top to bottom, this group set out to achieve big things, and this is just the beginning."
Spencer, a Bay Shore, N.Y., native, earned first team honors after enjoying a breakthrough season in 2009. She started the year with the game-winning goal in the 3-0 win over Army and never slowed up. Spencer led the team with 25 points on 10 goals, including four game-winners, and was tied for second on the squad with five assists. Her 25 points were the most fo Terrapin in a season since 1998 when Keri Sarver set the school record with 49 points. Her 10 goals are also the most since 1999 when Jackie Mynarski had 11.

Baker, a native of Brick, N.J., was a third team selection as the backbone of a Maryland backline that earned nine shutouts and won three games over Top 25 opponents. Baker returned to the line-up after missing all of 2008 due to knee surgery. In addition to playing tremendously at center back, she also proved to be an offensive threat this season, totaling five points on two goals and an assist. |
"We are pleased that both Jasmyne and Mallory have been recognized for their individual efforts," said Pensky. "They are both outstanding players and people. We are fortunate to have both of them for two more years."
